OK, first off, I am just not going for this rustic look. Nothing against YoYoJam but I tend to feel that a yo-yo should look at least as good as it performs. The aluminum sides again are un-polished but they’re not brushed either. They’ve got the same “un-finish” as the bottom of a soda can. Not my cup of tea at all. The engraving also doesn’t do it for me. It’s purposely uncentered (or is it?) and the font just looks sloppy. My string even arrived dirty. But does it perform? Yes it does. It’s got the best balance of any mini yoyo that I’ve tried. It’s got a nicer unwind then the Pocket Rocket (the PR tend to fall off the last few inches of string) and it plays more like a full-size yo-yo. The return system is the same 4 divots that you see in the DragonJam and the SpinFaKtor and again, it works just fine. Including the rubber rings it’s just slightly bigger in diameter than the PR and without the rings it’s considerable smaller. It weighs a lot less though and for me that’s a problem. I like the inertia of a heavier yo-yo. The adjustable string gap isn’t really an asset because for me, there’s only one position where I get a good balance of smoothness and response. Assuming that every person will find a different sweet spot then I guess it’s a good thing. And when I adjust my string gap to where I like it it’s about the same size as the Pocket Rocket’s but the PR’s sloping sides allow lots more room for string layers. So which one wins? For me it’s a toss-up. If the Pocket Rocket had a little better balance and smoothness it would win. If the miniJam had a little more weight and some more room for string layers (and a lot better appearance) then it would win. I see myself carrying the Pocket Rocket more because of its better weight and appearance. In someone else’s hands the miniJam might perform better but in mine it’s just too light. I guess for most people the miniJam would be a better value because of the lack of replaceable Turbo Disks but for me, value also means material quality and craftsmanship and that’s what I see more of in the Pocket Rocket.

When I first saw my MiniJam, I was a bit disappointed by the size. I knew it was 1 1/2 inches in diameter, but it still seemed much smaller. The $23.95 for it (this includes shipping & handling) seems a bit far-fetched, but I guess it meets its worth in weight, being aluminum. This yo-yo weighs as much as some regular-sized yo-yos, and for such a small one it seems almost unnatural. I can barely do any loops on it, but it sleeps great. If you can do a decent throw, then it’ll sleep long enough for you to do any trick in the book, but it’s kind of hard to wake it up even if you have it double-looped (which is how I have it). It does string tricks, but obviously not as well as a butterfly. Overall, I’d say its above average. But I wouldn’t buy another one if I lost mine. Get a TBB for 6 bucks less. But other than that it’s the best MINI yo-yo of them all.
