The Proyo Mongoose is a great player with viper shells on, it’s pretty worthless without them. Initially it is some what catchy, but what yo-yo isn’t at first. All it really needs is for the pads to be broken in and the bearing to be cleaned. Now this thing is a gem. I can land just about all the tricks I know on this thing; usually when I do Skin the Gerbil I get a lot of slow down, even on my Gades and Aluminum Wheel, but on the Mongoose I have no problems. My only concern is that it can be a little unpredictable at times, one second it plays smooth as silk, the next you are in knuckle bite city. ArmorAll on the break pads really helps the consistency in play. Oh yeah be careful, it came apart on me once and the string slipped off the bearing once, but just a little adjustment of the brake pads really solves the problem. I really can’t compare it to the viper b/c it’s been so long since I have played with one, I’m pretty sure the play is similar. I’m not a very experienced off string player, but from what I see, it gets the job done. I really like the mongoose, and as I play with it more and more it gets even better. I’m not a huge proyo fan, but I can honestly say that (when tuned properly) this thing hangs right up there with the Gades and the Spinfaktor. Tip: Do the Arizona Brake Pad mod. When your brake pads hit their sweet spot, put a just a little krazy glue on the tips of the fingers. This really keeps them in their sweet spot for a long time.(I heard some people say theirs has last them a month and are still going strong.) If, you have any questions talk to Scarecrow, his tips really help.

The Mongoose is Playmaxx’s answer to Henry’s Viper. Out of the package its simply an aluminum hub with two rubber o-rings and the play is ludicrous. Far too light to be of any use at all. But take off the o-rings and voila, it’s suddenly the perfect size and shape to accept Henry’s Viper shells. And with the Viper shells added you suddenly have one awesome performer. The response system uses Playmaxx’s original thick brake pads and once they’ve worn in the play is super smooth and the response is dead reliable. Back-spin and multi layer tricks are no problem despite the slightly small string gap. For those that like a wider string gap the Mongoose might be a problem because the axle system used is the same as the Ace II and is not open to shimming. Playmaxx is also supposed to be coming out with their own shells which when added will transform the Mongoose into a full-sized modified shape yo-yo.
